SEMINAR ON “CURRENT EARTHQUAKE RELATED ACTIVITIES IN BANGLADESH” HELD AT MIST

A Seminar on “CURRENT EARTHQUAKE RELATED ACTIVITIES IN BANGALADESH” was held at Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Mirpur Cantonment, Dhaka-1216 on 22 October 2009. Dr. Mohammad Abdur Razzaque, Hon’able Minister, Ministry of Food and Disaster Management graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC, BRAC University and Professor Dr. A. M. M. Safiullah, VC, BUET were also present as Special Guests. Dr. Mehedi Ahmed Ansary, Professor, CE Department BUET & Vice President Bangladesh Earthquake Society, and Colonel Md Gazi Ferooz Rahman, Senior Instructor & Head CE Department, MIST presented the keynote papers in the seminar. Acting Commandant, MIST Brigadier General Habibur Rahman Kamal, psc, Ph. D., Senior Military & Civil Officials, Faculty Members from different Universities and students of MIST were present in the Seminar.

The speakers pointed out that Bangladesh is vulnerable to earthquake activities. A series of recent tremors that shock parts of the country including the capital Dhaka indicates that Bangladesh sits on one of the major earthquake zones of the world. Once a great earthquake occurs, Dhaka will suffer immense losses of lives and properties. This will have very severe long term consequences for the entire country.  BUET, Government Agencies, NGOS, various Universities/Institutions, Mass Media and other organizations including Armed Forces are doing research works for the most deadly natural disaster, Earthquakes and working continuously to promote mass awareness to safe guard human lives and properties. They opined that for earthquake disaster mitigation, some pre and post measures like awareness & capacity building, earthquake engineering research, earthquake resistant construction etc. should be undertaken on an urgent basis
